With the Fins from Amorphis we’ve managed to bill yet another groundbreaking band. Originally founded in 1990 as a death metal outfit, Amorphis have since evolved into a unique ensemble that incorporates folk, doom, death and progressive influences. Their magnum opus ‘Tales from the Thousand Lakes’ (1994) is a metal landmark but instead of riding the wave on subsequent albums, they continued to experiment and grow as a band. The addition of new singer Tomi Joutsen to the line-up signalled a return to Amorphis’ roots, resulting in top-notch albums such as ‘Silent Waters’ (2007) with its catchy clean vocals and spine-chilling growls, a brooding and melancholic atmosphere and tonnes of musicianship. Their most recent effort, ‘Under the Red Cloud’, is a crucible that blends death/doom/folk/progressive tendencies into a mesmerising whole. Amorphis’ 13th album is scheduled to drop sometime in 2018.
