Although Poland is Catholic as hell, the country has also produced some of the metal scene’s most prominent extreme metal bands. After surviving a bout with leukaemia, frontman Nergal and his cohorts in Behemoth have gone from strength to strength, leading the charge with black/death metal straight from the mouth of hell. Few bands in the genre have the same live appeal, as they’ve proven time and again at festivals all over the world. 2014’s ‘The Satanist’ was a key album for Behemoth: not only was the songwriting more dynamic than ever before, the album’s more emotional outlook was rooted in Nergal’s plight and acted as a counterweight to the more detached and by-the-numbers approach on ‘’Evangelion’ (2009). Universally hailed as the band’s best studio effort to date, ‘The Satanist’ (2014) will be a tough act to follow but if anyone can… The new disc is set to drop in the autumn of 2018 but who knows, we may even get a little preview of Behemoth’s 11th studio album at Alcatraz. After all, the Dark Lord works in mysterious ways.
